A Great Start

The Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Games was a spectacular show. Each component of the show was choreographed to perfection. My favorite part of the show was the Aboriginal piece, it was amazing. It was great that VANOC had joined with the Aboriginal people of BC. It made Vancouver's opening ceremonies so unique. Another great part of the show was the mountain and the snowboards and skiers. It was a creative way to incorporate snow in an closed stadium.
The show was great, there was five final torch bearers! Wayne Gretzky, Steve Nash, Nancy Greene, Rick Hansen and Catriona Le May Dean. Unfortunately one of the four pillars of the cauldron was not coming up. It look a little silly at first but all in all it was a magically night. Wayne Gretzy then went down to Waterfront to light the outside cauldron which was breath taking!

Only Half an Hour left

Only half an hour left until the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. I was following the torch relay and it was amazing. I think I will let the pictures speak for themselves! My favourite part of the torch relay was when the "torch kiss" this is when the two torches meet and the flame is transferred between the torches. The torch relay is the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history. Over 45,000 km was covered, over 12,000 torch bearers carried the flame through out Canada.

I went downtown and went to Robson Square to see all the buzz there. The zip line was in full swing and it looked like so much fun! I might go on it soon, if I get a chance to. The BC house was very busy, I did not get to go in but it looked like fun! Then I walked to the library to see the CODE sponsored by the Cultural Olympiad. The CODE is about the Olympic Truce, it was not in service today but I think it is going to in the other days. The Olympic Truce is about making your peace. I caught the Canada Line to Yaletown when I saw the torch relay again! It was amazing I think I got some great pictures!
Then I wondered around and ended up at the Livecity Yaletown. Just a couple of tips if you are going to any Livecity events. Try to come with the smallest bag possible because you will go through security. Do not bring any food or bevarages becuase they will trash them. Only half an hour till the Opening Ceremonies!! Watch it live are http://www.ctv.bc.ca/

Opening Ceremonies!

I have just come home from the final dress rehearsal of the 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremonies! It was an amazing show! The ceremony was stunning and the world will love what they will see on Feb. 12th. I am not going to say anything about the show, I do not want to give it away. I can however tell you that it is going to be an opening ceremony that the world is going to remember. The whole world is going to be in awe as the Opening Ceremonies start! The show is jam packed with famous Canadian singers and an spectacular aboriginal piece. Ooops I think I said to much already, no more about the show.

Things that you need to know if you are going to the opening ceremonies or any other Olympic Game event is that you need to come prepared. Your ticket acts as your bus pass and you can ride on public transit the day of your event. I think that it is best if you leave early and make sure you give yourself ample amout of time. When you are at the event try to bring the smallest bag possible so you will not have to wait in line for security. Make sure that you do not bring any food, or any other items that are prohibited by VANOC. To get more information on what you can and cannot bring go to VANOC's website" http://www.vancouver2010.com/

The 2010 Olympics Games are almost here! The opening ceremony on Friday will blow your mind! Make sure to watch the event on TV or if you have tickets have fun! Tomorrow I will go to the torch celebration at Yaletown!!

Olympic Craze

Today was a drizzly day in Vancouver, but Olympic fever had taken over the city. In the morning there was Students Live meeting, where we got our transit passes! After that went to the International Media Centre at Robson Square. The media centre is amazing, it is exactly what every reporter would dream of. It is high tech, and is going to be buzzing with excitement. Many reporters from all over the world will be in the centre writing to their newspapers. It will truly be an amazing experience. I will be going to the Centre on February 12th; the day of the opening ceremonies!
On the way to Robson Square we walked down Granville Street and there was so much people on the street. There was a lantern road and and many sculptures by different artist. When we were walking we spotted a couple of Czech Republic athletes. We all decide to go up to them and ask them what sport they are competing in. They were luge athletes and we got a picture with them. Unfortunately it was not with my camera, as soon as I get that picture I will put it up. We also met some Russian officials at the food court in the Pacific Centre. They were nice enough to let us take a picture with them.

The 2010 Olympic Games are almost here, the torch is getting closer to BC Stadium and on February 12. I will be going to the Opening Ceremonies Final Rehearsal on February 10th. Next post will be then!

Getting to the Games

The games are getting closer and the road restrictions are setting in place in Vancouver. Many major roads downtown will be closed for the Olympic Games, downtown traffic is going to be crazy. VANOC is urging commutators to leave their car at home and catch public transit. If that is not possible they suggest that people car pool. Going downtown during the Olympics is going to be crazy, but there are some things that can ease the craziness.
A great way to travel downtown during the Olympic games is to catch public transit. There will be more buses on the road to Olympic Venues and the sky trains will be running more frequently. It is best to check on http://www.translink.ca/ to plan your trip ahead of time. Translink has a great tool that lets you plan your trip and gives everything from walking distance to fare. I use it a lot when I need to get around Vancouver! The Canada line connects most Olympic venues with in walking or one bus trip. A good tip is to go early, lines will be crazy and its always good to get there early. VANOC is suggesting that you should go at least two hours before your event, yes a long time! Its better to go early then to miss your event!

Another great way to get around for the games is the Olympic Line Street Car. This street car will only be around for the 2010 Olympic games. On Monday I celebrated the end of midterms by going downtown and figure skating at Robson Garden. It was my first time figure skating and I did not fall down!!! Robson Garden look amazing and I had a blast. Robson Garden is the place where the British Columbia pavilion will be. Another great thing at Robson Square is the city zip line that will be open during the games! I hope I will be able to go one it!! After the skating I decided to check out the Olympic Line Street Car. It is a cable car that runs from Olympic Village to Granville Island. It is a free twelve minute ride that uses the old Vancouver cable car line. The two cable cars are on loan from Brussels, Belgium and they are very cool! The cable car is very stylish and show a different side of Vancouver. It shows a quieter side and a very natural side as well. The cable car started on January 21 and will end on March 21, they run from 6:30 AM to 12:30 AM. A fun way to get to Granville Island.

Getting round the games will be crazy but it will be worth it, so see that amazing event!! The Olympic Games are getting closer!
